Closed caption subtitles are not currently supported on the Internet Archive, but they definitely should be supported. There are 2 barriers.
1. When the 512k MP4 is created only the video and audio are transferred, while the subtitles are dropped, and possibly other audtio tracks are also dropped. This should be easy to fix.
2. The cript for the player does not setup the video options unlike Google and many other sites. This is a simple change in the generated HTL.

I have manually changed the 512k MP4 file so it has subtitles, but they do not appear because of problem #2.

While it is possible to have the subtitles as part of the video, this mars classic videos, and are not needed by native speakers of the movie language. But more importantly by having closed captioning the user can select the language, and this can be vital for the hard of hearing.

So this option needs to be made available so downloaders can provide closed captioned movies. Everyone else is doing it, so the Archive needs to implement these simple changes.

Subtitles aren’t just for people who speak another language, they are also highly needed for people who are hard of hearing or even deaf. Just because you’re deaf doesn’t mean you don’t like a good TV Show or Movie from time to time like everyone else. What’s most annoying is when you buy a movie and it’s got a several subtitle languages not one in English. I wish a time would come that subtitles for the hard of hearing became mandatory to help people with this disability.
If you could work on a way to support subtitles I think many would appreciate this extra feature on your site. They are also great if you have the sound low as not to disturb or wake anyone.

While subtitles are a great enhancement, it is best if they can be switched off. I used to have closed captions on a movie, but for some reason that broke. The problem is something that needs to be addressed by their software gurus. Closed captions or embedded subtitles are a lot of work to implement, so perhaps some movie buffs can do the work and supply a set of closed captions that can be added to the movies I posted.

Tracey, that's great, thanks! Out of curiosity, do you know since when the Internet Archive has supported closed captions?

Hi,
I am looking for information on the status of any current closed captioning supported on archive.org?
Are scc files supported?
If so, how does one go about uploading them for access to the viewer?
Thanks for any info. you might be able to share!

While the site's own player may only support .srt files, users may need other formats for other contexts. For example, .vtt files are the preferred format for html5 video.

For "The Speckled Band (1931)" [https://archive.org/details/SpeckledBand] I have subtitle files in many formats. How can I upload them and associate them with the video? Here’s what I have:

- SubRip Subtitles (.srt)
- WebVTT (.vtt and .2014.vtt)
- QuickTime Captions (.qt.txt and .qt.smil)
- QuickTime TeXML subtitles (.qt.xml)
- Windows Media Player captions (.smi and .asx)
- Clean Text Transcript (.clean.txt)
- Raw Text Transcript with Markers (.txt) (CaptionSync)

I see the UPLOAD button but I don't see a way to associate my files with an existing entry.

Thanks.

i'd need to check more but afaik we only support .srt for the video player. you would use [filename].srt where [filename] is the name of the video file.

If I just upload SpeckledBand.srt will it automatically be associated and listed on the movie's page?

Jeff, I haven't uploaded anything yet. I'm trying to. I'm looking for guidance. Please help me. I don't want to just upload ten files blindly. I read the FAQ and didn't find the answers.

I have 10 text files that I'd like to associate with The Speckled Band (1931), which is already on the site. MAY I DO THAT? HOW DO I DO THAT? Should I just upload the files? Do files associate automatically somehow? Does someone else match them up after the fact? I don't want to just upload them into limbo.

I want to contribute. Please tell me what I need to do or point me to the relevant instructions.

That's new info. I didn't know that. Thank you.

I'll ask my original question again, and please, bear with me. I'm trying to be helpful.

I have files that others might want, subtitles to one of Archive's movies in many formats, as well as a clean transcript. I want to share them. How can I do that?

Nobody is answering that fundamental question. HOW can I contribute my files? I'm about to give up.

we do appreciate contributions and do try to help.

this is what i would suggest:
1. upload your [filename].srt files to individual pages and use metadata very similar to the movie item you wish them to be used with/in. you can even post a link to the movie in the description field.
2. go to the page where the movie is and leave a review with your offer and a link to the page with the file.

the uploader of the movie will be notified that there is a new review and they may choose to download your file and upload it to their movie item.

We changed the license to "CC Attribution" so we no longer want to move the subtitles to the movie page. I'm just noting that here for completeness.

I understand that the player here at archive.org only supports .srt files, but when the video is used in different contexts, other formats are required. The files may be worthwhile for others. Can they be uploaded just as additional resources? We'd like to contribute to the community.

yes you can add more, they'll be politely ignored by our system.
the one we use is indeed .srt and it's documented briefly here:

http://archive.org/help/video.php

(look for .srt)
